Jim began working in the veteran's service arena in 1974
while attending college. He served as the Vet Rep on campus through
the VA work-study program; he worked for the South Dakota Division
of Veterans Affairs for 17 years. He was the supervisor of their
Claims Office at the time of his resignation and worked as the
State Coordinator for the Vietnam Veterans Family Assistance Program
for 1 year through the National American Legion. He formed the non-
profit corporation, The American Coalition for Family Assistance and
served as its National Director for three years. He began working
for the North Dakota American Legion in August 2000 and currently
holds, the position of Department Service Officer.
As the Department Service Officer Mr. Deremo has had extensive
training in VA law. He has attended all but 2 of the 44 Department
Service Officer schools conducted by the National American Legion in
cooperation with the National Veterans Legal Services Corporation (NVLSP).
These schools consist of in-depth analysis of Court of Veterans
Appeals decisions, lectures on anatomy and physiology, medical
causation, VA insurance, Discharge Review Board operations, Board
for the Correction of Military Records, and many more.
He is
certified as a non-attorney practitioner before the United States
Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims.
